Despite a recent pay hike, public hospitals in France are still struggling to recruit staff who are often drawn to the more lucrative private sector. Some 100,000 positions in public hospitals remain vacant, a third of them nurses. The labour shortage comes at a highly inopportune time amid the second wave of Covid-19.
